-Skerryvore
Lighthouse-
Skerryvore
lighthouse stands 12 miles to the South West of Tiree. It was built between 1839
and 1844 by Alan Stevenson who was an uncle of the writer Robert Louis Stevenson.
Alan was a prolific engineer in his time and belonged to a family whose name is
synonymous with the building and design of Scottish Lighthouses. Previous to the
construction of the lighthouse on Skerryvore, it was known as one of the most
dangerous reefs around the coast of the British Isles. Its position, just to the
North of a busy Atlantic shipping lane was to cause many ships and lives to be
lost. The lighthouse measures 138 feet in height, with a diameter of 42 feet at
the base narrowing to 16 feet round the lantern gallery. At the time it was built
it gained a huge amount of acclaim in the world of architecture. In an article
in The Times it was rated as "one of the 5 most prestigious towers in the
world". The combination of its aesthetic beauty, its practical function and
its most inhospitable location make it a truly remarkable building achievement.
Robert Louis Stevenson gave it the accolade of being "The noblest of all
extant deep sea lights", a view which is still widely agreed upon. To this
day Skerryvore lighthouse is regarded as one of the greatest feats of engineering
in the world. |
The
Island of Staffa & Fingal's Cave
The
Island of Staffa is a world-renowned site of natural wonder. Its rock
formation is the same as that of the Giant's Causeway in the North of Ireland.
Although the whole island of Staffa is fascinating, it is Fingal's Cave that has
brought it most fame. Measuring 230 feet, the remarkable cave has been visited
by many famous people since it was first made known to the wider world in the
1770s. Queen Victoria, Sir Walter Scott, Keats, Wordsworth and Tennyson all visited
and were inspired to write about the cave. The artist, Turner, painted a huge
watercolour of it, and most famously of all, Felix Mendelssohn was inspired to
compose the Hebrides Overture.
Our
trip to Staffa is 4.5 hours' duration. From Tiree we sail close by the Treshnish
islands, which are world renowned for their bird life. When we reach Staffa, we
take a short walk round a pathway and into Fingal's Cave. Here the majestic sound
of the Great Highland Bagpipe can be heard in the superb acoustics of the cave.
You will be shown the exact spot where in August 1847 Queen Victoria and her family
landed and were overawed by the sight of Fingal's Cave. We then leave you to wander
freely and at your leisure to enjoy the bird life and the natural beauty of the
island for the rest of your hour-long period ashore. |

-Lunga-
The island of Lunga is famed for its vast array of bird life. Huge numbers of remarkably tame and inquisitive puffins inhabit this, the largest of the Treshnish Islands.
Within minutes of landing you will be literally feet away from hundreds of puffins, some of whom actually wander closer when they see you! |
-Wildlife & fishing trips-
Wild
life trips and fishing trips, or a combination of the two are available from anything
between 1 and 4 hours in duration. There are various different routes we take
on these tours depending on any information on wildlife sightings or fish being
caught at certain locations that day. Again, seals, basking sharks, and dolphins
are seen regularly, and on occasion we may even spo t whales. If you feel like
catching some lovely fresh fish for your tea, on the menu are Saith, Mackerel
or Pollock. All are common round Tiree, all are thrilling and exciting to catch
and all are absolutely delicious to eat!

As a
work/dive boat
The 'Scimitar' was designed and built initially for archaeological
marine survey work, and in fact appeared on Discovery Channel in this capacity.
Its large deck and storage space and its spacious wheelhouse mean there is plenty
room for any equipment required. The 240 volt diesel generator, the large number
of power sockets and large benches on either side of the wheelhouse make it ideal
for using any computerised equipment. There is also a chart plotter with differential
GPS on board for accurate position finding and recording when carrying out seabed
surveys. The vessel has also been used to service marine wind farms and oilrigs
and due to its stability and seaworthiness is ideally suited to these and any
similar jobs. |
